Mobiles and smartphones: Samsung crushes everything in the first quarter

Despite continued sales of smartphones soaring, the global mobile market struggling to advance in the first quarter, notes Gartner. 425.8 million units have been sold an annual increase of just 0.7 per cent from 2012.

Thanks to its massive portfolio of products, Samsung has consolidated its overall domination with a market share that earns 2.5 points to 23.6% (more than 100 million units sold). South Korean widens the gap with Nokia, whose share lost almost 5 points to 14.8%.

A year ago, Samsung sold "only" 6 million mobile more than Nokia. Today, the gap is 37 million units!

With 38 million of past terminals, Apple clings firmly to its third place in the world with a share going from 7.8 to 9%. LG is at the foot of the podium but it is very far from the trio of head with 15.6 million of past mobile.

 

On the side of smartphones, the dominance of Samsung is even stronger with 31% market share. The giant sold 64.7 210 millions of smartphones sold in the period!

Windows almost 3rd Phone

Apple manages the tour de force to maintain second (18.2% vs. 22.5% a year ago) despite the absence of novelty. LG seems to confirm his return in smartphones with a share that increased from 3.4 to 4.8% for 10 million units sold. The manufacturer is nevertheless become Huawei and ZTE.

The Anssi advises companies to accept the BYOD

The use of smartphones in business, whether they are provided by the company or provided by employees (phenomenon BYOD) necessarily induce increased risks of security and data leak.

Manufacturers and specialty publishers increasing solutions to control this trend with tools of protection or permitting separate sealed environment perso and pro in the same terminal (Good Technology, Blackberry Balance, Samsung Knox etc...).

But for ANSSI, the National Agency for the security of information systems, these solutions are insufficient. "Current security solutions are ineffective to ensure proper protection of professional data," can be read in a technical note that the Agency has released.

She therefore took the opportunity to deliver 21 recommendations for it managers.

BYOD: not a good idea

"When information systems deal with sensitive information, terminals to access must imperatively be dedicated and have been the subject of a security assessment, ideally be labeled by the ANSSI. This labelling can indeed attest to the robustness of the solution compared to the main threats a contrario those which simply consist of an application development (a "security application") which will bring, at best, partial protection of sensitive data. When the data are classified, marked as restricted or Special France, a specific regulation applies", warns the Agency.

Examples including the use of centralized management of mobile devices (RMD), the reduction of the lifetimes of passwords or the lock time of the terminal, the ban on access to the shops of applications, the functions of geolocation related applications, encryption of internet storage etc...

Finally, the ANSSI believes that the BYOD is far from being a good idea for businesses. "Because of the previous recommendations, the coexistence of private and business uses on the same terminal must be studied carefully. Compliance with the requirements of this document is wholly incompatible event of a BYOD policy within an organization. In most cases, professional terminal must be dedicated for this purpose (the user can
generally use its own terminal for personal use).

If the use of a single smartphone for both contexts cannot be avoided, depending on the sensitivity of the company data processed on the mobile, should implement solutions for effectively partitioning each environment (personal, professional) by being vigilant on various levels of security solutions of the market. A qualification by the ANSSI must be a criterion for the choice of such a solution,"said the Agency.

Jolla presents its first smartphone under Sailfish

Monetate yesterday announced a doubling of mobile traffic in a year, including an increase of more than 20% of Web traffic in the United States from so-called "mobile" terminals, in the first quarter of 2013 - approximately 10% of smartphones and 10% of the shelves!

In France also, mobile traffic explodes - even if the average is lower. The conversion rate on smartphones is lower than on the web, and yet it did not seem to worry some marketers who continue to do not optimize the user experience.
There are too many marketing departments who do not the difference between tablets and smartphones. And yet, the consumer uses and contexts of use are very different.
The tablets are mainly used at home - first in the living room, then in the bedroom, and then in the kitchen. On the other hand, smartphones are much more used in situation of mobility and in many different contexts - to access quickly to information and complete tasks.

"Tablet Marketing"

It is still too early to measure the use of the iPad mini and other 7-inch tablets, or even of «phablets» of type Galaxy Note, but the analysis of North American data show that even the shelves with 4 G connectivity (the US are more advanced than Europe on this technology) remain mostly used at home.

Smartphones are now available to the general public, while shelves beyond only the critical size.  Above all, smartphones are the terminals more personal that individuals use while the shelves are shared with other members of the family.
Marketers should use the tablets in the phases of discoveries and explorations of their brands and their products, using the best features of iPads and other Tablet - video, rich media, content, touch interfaces, extension of the TV screen.

The tablet marketing"is still nascent but it is urgent to tailor the experience to the user context - rather than adapting content to the size of the screen. Tablets replace especially today PCs and their owners spend less time on print media. It is time to optimize the marketing mix to reach these influencers and prepare new uses.

Tomorrow, through the connected objects, tablets will be increasingly used in place of smartphones within the home - opening up new marketing opportunities.
